Briefly describe the Documentary Hypothesis. Include in your answer the purpose of the Documentary Hypothesis and a brief description of the four sources, J, E, P, D.
The Documentary Hypothesis challenges the belief that there is one author of the Pentateuch, and claim that originally independent, parrell and complete narratives were combined into its current form by a series of editors. The Documentary Hypothesis claims there were 4 sources and the different names for God, the variation in language, style, contradictions and inconsistencies bolstered the arguement that there were different sources. The sources were identified as J- Jahwist, E-Elohist, D-Deuteronomist, and P- Priestly. The J source described a human like God and referred to Him as Yahweh. E source also described a human like God, and referred to God as Elhoim until God revealed Himself as Yahweh. D referred to God as Yahweh Elohainu, the Lord our God. P- stressed the importance of the priesthood.
The Documentary Hypothesis The Documentary hypothesis is an attempt to question the belief and author of Pentateuch. It is an attempt to reconcile inconsistencies in the biblical text. The documentary hypothesis propose that there were four distinct authors, each dealing with the same characters and circumstances. The J(Jahwist) is the oldest source, describes a human like God, called Yahweh. The E (Elohist) describes a human like God initially called Elohim whereas Elohim reveals himself as Yahweh. The D (Deuteronmist) takes the form of a series about the Law. Its distinctive term for God is YHWH Elohainu. The P(Priestly) describes a distant and unmerciful God, referred to as Elohim. P partly duplicates J and E, but alters details to stress the important of priesthood.
